Parable of the Sower

My name is Esmeralda Navarro and I attend Cal State LA. I am one of Professor Hicks student and we have been focusing in the environment. Most of the readings we have read have to do with the environment. Throughout all the readings we have read in class, the one I think is more important is Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. The novel Parable of the Sower is about a dystopian world in the year 2024-2027. The countyrside goes through an economical and environmental crisis where people have tried to confront these problems, but it has become difficult to escape from the unprotected environment for a better future. Robledo, a community that goes through so much chaos has made life hard for those living there; the water is so expensive, there are no jobs, and there is no hope for a better life.

Have u ever wondered how it would be like in 50 years from now? Many have pictured the future to have flying cars, new inventions and advanced technology. Do we need all these things to have a better future and forget about the things we are doing to our environment? Its up to us to determine how we want our future to be like, but people have to keep a safe environment now and for the next generations.

Parable of the Sower is an example of how the future might end up. Lauren Olamina the main character confronts everyone to pursue her dreams, knowing she doesnt have her family to support her in the decisions she has to make. The author pursuades and informs the reader to take care of the world in order to have a better future. Its not too late to make a change and see how it would be like to live in a future with no hope of having a better life. In fact, our environment has become so damaged that we dont give ourselves some time to clean and join in any community service to help our earth. Any little change helps the environment and motivating others to do the same if we want to have a safer environment. The novel has made me realize how earth needs our help because we are its only hope. No one would want to be in Laurens shoes, so we should think about what kind of future we would like for ourselves and know what decisions to make that will give us the best results for our coming future.
